Reaching New Heights with College Bound Students

The Admissions team at Minnesota School of Business-St. Cloud welcomed vacationing 5th-12th grade students back to school recently as part of District 742′s College Bound program. They led the students to the heights of a rock-climbing wall and through assorted team-building exercises.

The college is hosting, in partnership with District 742, two career academies (as well as a post-secondary preview) during June and July to encourage post-secondary education and career readiness.

The College Bound program is open to all students grades 5-12, even students from other school districts, according to District 742′s Jayne Greeney Schill, the College Bound Coordinator and Counselor. The program has been operating since 2000 with goals to increase awareness, access and ability for all students to enter successfully post-secondary education and careers.

The academy begins with team building exercises on Day 1 to ready the students for cooperative skills. Guest speakers in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); Health Careers; Business, Entrepreneurship, Accounting and Marketing (BEAM); Digital Media; and Hi Tech-Sci Tech are featured throughout the two week program, as well as field trips in these specific areas.

The MSB staff has been great to work with, said Greeney Schill. “They have shown such willingness–to coordinating field trips to being speakers to e-mentoring.”

A total of 27 MSB faculty and staff members have volunteered to participate in the program, and the Woodbury and Richfield campuses are field trip destitnations.

On a sunny summer’s day on the National Guard’s rock-climbing wall or six-person skis, it was difficult to tell whether students or staff were having more fun.
