Students in the veterinary technology production class have been learning all quarter about working with animals such as cows, pigs, etc. But getting a chance to work up close with them on a dairy farm is a much different experience.
22 year-old Corey Rodewald of Rodewald Dairy Farm in Ulen, Minnesota has his hands full. Milking 46 cows and staying on top of all his duties isn’t easy. But students from the VT 270 class had a chance to help him out for a day performing several different tasks.
The students put halters on, took temperature pulses, performed a group California mastitis test, and even got to milk some cows by hand!
The students spent almost three hours on the farm and had a chance to apply the skills they learned in the classroom.
“Getting that kind of experience and learning on an actual farm really helps the students understand the material,” instructor Terri Yeager said.
The students testing revealed that one of the cows did have mastitis in one of its udders and the only solution was to remove it.
“The students definitely got more than they bargained for when they showed up,” Yeager joked. “But it was a great experience for them to get this kind of training.”

what a really good post as i think getting up close and working on a dairy farm is a really good way for the students to get hands on experience !!
