Global Citizenship students traded a morning in the classroom for a morning on a ranch to learn what being a citizen is all about.
“We believe it’s important for our students to understand what being a part of a community is and how it looks,” said Minnesota School of Business instructor, Nicole Rasmussen. “As citizens, we should all be volunteering in our communities and allowing ourselves to feel the accomplishment of making a difference.”
Rasmussen, along with 11 Minnesota School of Business students, spent a day volunteering at 2nd Chance Youth Ranch in Ramsey, which just opened its doors a few months ago.
The ranch focuses on providing a retreat environment for youth groups, families and even local businesses. Groups can perform ranch-hand chores, interact with many of the animals on the ranch or partake in several activities happening daily.
The class spent their morning cleaning and organizing an arts and crafts room,
scraping and sanding windows to get them ready for paint, pitch-forking hay out
of a barn and into feeding areas, weeding a garden and weed whacking the property.
Ranch owner, Robin Fitzgerald said she was delighted to have the students help out at the ranch.
“In a few hours, some chores were done that would have taken me 3 days,” Fitzgerald said. “All of the help is so appreciated and the students were so willing to jump in, work hard, and get dirty.”
