The Results are in for the Elk River DECA Invitational

DECA competitors Darren Thomas, Taylor Metcalf and Felix Benitez accept awards for the marketing event.

Way before the morning traffic hit and before most people had even drunk the first sip of morning coffee, the Minnesota School of Business—Elk River campus was already stirring with excitement as staff members started setting up for the Second Annual Elk River DECA Invitational last Friday.

More than 35 Minnesota School of Business students, representing five MSB campuses, spent the day preparing presentations and responding to case studies in one or multiple events that revolved around marketing, business ethics, human resources and sales management.

“These events give students the opportunity to apply their critical thinking skills and education towards real life work situations,” said Elk River DECA advisor Leslie Nicol. “They will assist the students in providing solutions to situations that may arise in their chosen career field.”

To ensure students are judged fairly, local business leaders serve as judges for the events.  Each event has two judges and the students’ scores are a combination of the scores given by the judges.

The main event concluded with an awards ceremony, where it became very obvious that there was a clear champion of the day.

Taylor Metcalf, a Rochester student, took first place in all three of his events.

“Minnesota School of Business DECA conferences are great to attend if you have never competed before, if you want to try new events, or if you need experience to calm any nerves before state or nationals,” said a humble Metcalf.

The next Minnesota School of Business DECA invitational will be held at the Lakeville campus on Jan.11, 2013.  To register, contact your local campus DECA advisor.
